how to order a Nexus One outside the US

You might have heard it or not but yesterday Google announced the Nexus One. Besides the normal demonstration and sales pitch they also showed that the phone is available for purchase through a Google Store. At the moment only people living in the US, UK, Hong Kong or Singapore can order the phone via Google. Google is not allowing people from other countries to access the order-pages. Luckily their is an unofficial way to order the phone outside the mentioned countries.

To get this done, you require several things:

• VPN access (this will trick the Google page of thinking that you are in the US. Proxies can be used but don’t always work)
• Shipping address in the US
• Google Check out account

VPN access
The Google website only displays an order-button when you are living in one of the above mentioned countries. In order to access this page, you need to trick Google in thinking that you live in for instance the US. You can do this by using a VPN service. Try to search for them and you will a huge amount of these services. I have heard some good stories about: HotSpot VPN

Shipping address in the US
Google will only ship phones to the countries that are supported so you also require an address in the US. You could either ask a friend or colleague but if that is not possible, you can also get a fictional address in the US like MyUS.com, is offering. They will accept the parcel and forward it to an address you specified. As soon as you have received a fictional address or have your friend’s address, enter it in your Google Checkout account and mark it as the default shipping address

Google Check Out account
This is linked to your Gmail account and can be setup via http://checkout.google.com

When all the above is setup just follow the order process via http://www.google.com/phone and you’re done. Keep an eye at the inbox at your fictional address so the phone is forwarded to your home address
Make sure you select the right phone (unlocked one) and keep in mind that engraving your phone will take 72 additional hrs
