Only four days of using this device but what am I impressed! It is a great tablet! Is it the best tablet? No. Will there ever be the best tablet? No! But the Nexus 7 is close to it. (for now at least)
I love the 7 inch form factor ever since I had the original Galaxy Tab and I truly missed the ability to just carry it around which I just can't with the iPad or with the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Only a front-facing camera? Good enough for me! Never took photos with a tablet and will never understand people who do it. Would have placed it differently because when I do a Hangout I would hold the Nexus in landscape mode. Same goes for the speaker.
Love the backside, the material is just great. The dimples give it a real feel. Never had the feeling it could slip out of my hand. The team kept in mind when they designed the bezel and that really shows!
Quad-core with Jelly Bean rock this little tablet! Man, it is lightening fast! Almost couldn't wish for more!
Colors don't seem to be really vibrant on the screen. I like them on my Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy tab, or the iPad for that matter, better.
I seem to have the model which has the loose screws issue. So you might see an update soon where I just take the Nexus apart to tighten the screws. Anyone having experience with this?
Not having a 3G/4G module is not causing any issues. But I am lucky to have a MIFI and can use my phone to tether. Some others might think this would be a problem but this allows you to use it without the need of getting a 2nd data subscription. And how often would you really use it where you don't have Wifi and you a working data connection?
Most Google apps take advantage of the larger screen. Only app lacking here is the Google Talk app. GT on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 shows a nice layout when using landscape. Missing that on the Nexus 7.
Fingers crossed that all +Google Play content will be available soon in the Netherlands. I tried it using VPN + unlock/root and the content that is in there is amazing at a reasonable price point.
Final verdict:
Great value for money. Lightening fast tablet. Amazing Android experience. Go buy it when you are in the run for a tablet and think 10.1/9.7 is too big.

First! XD
i want one where can i get it now?
I've not yet read a review that doesn't start out sounding like WOW but then has supporting text that says "wellllllll, but it's okay…"
I'm not a hater. I'm not an appleboy. I have a Kindle Fire and have hoped for a great Android tablet. But so far? Nothing has lit me up. Neither camp has made the product for me just yet, but then, I'm a creator, so maybe this nifty 11" Macbook Air is my tablet.
+erwin bolink the Netherlands is scheduled for September
+Chris Brogan All tablets will have things that some people will find difficult, the same with pretty much all PCs and Laptops. Personally I love my Nexus7 and have found nothing I dislike about it.
Thanks for the review +Arvid Bux. Confirms what I already suspected. And with that price tag I'm willing to give the tablet (as a device) my first try.
+Steve Kunzer - what about things like the camera placement, as mentioned above? And of course.
+Arvid Bux - you're not wrong. It's a great price point. What I feel it will do is open up even more possibilities and innovations from contenders. That's what Apple is missing.
+Chris Brogan tablets can be fun but they are not for creators. I noticed I can arrange my thoughts using a tablet or jot down stuff but when I comes down to writing stuff, I always grab my laptop.
Main reason why I start off with it being wow is that for 250 dollars, Google and ASUS where able to create an amazing device. Amazon was able to do the same and they also have the content to back the device. That is a big miss for me in The Netherlands. I am truly hoping they will open up Google Play with the official launch in NL.
Thanks for the review +Arvid Bux Have you used the Hangout feature on Nexus. I have an Galaxy s3 and Hangouts do not work properly
+Chris Brogan It depends how you hold the device, and I'm not sure there is a 'perfect' placement for that, or the microphone, or the speaker. I haven't found it to be a problem but I hold it at the bottom corners in landscape mode. I think it's possible to find problems with any device, if one (a) looks hard enough, and (b) compares it with a theoretical perfect device. That doesn't mean they're not problems, and I'm absolutely not saying the Nexus7 is perfect, nor possibly even the best device available (though value for money has to make it a good contender). All I'm saying is, like many people, I'm very happy with mine – even given some of the variable reviews I've read.
+Arvid Bux the availability of digital content still depends on feudal licensing agreements from legacy media giants that effectively create a "territorial divide". That's why I prefer content from indie authors, who know a thing or two about the web and 21st century technology.
+Arvid Bux dat hou ik nog wel vol
Still want one! Price/performance is cool
Thx +Arvid Bux
I'm trying to order one now via +Arjan Helle
I agree in toto with your review. Great little tablet with excellent speed, especially in the app switching and photo scrolling in the gallery. As you also say the screen could have had more vibrant colors, especially the greens look a little muted but that could also be a conditioning caused by using the Galaxy Nexus. I also have the screen issue where the left side tends to rise a bit from the plastic casing and not stay perfectly level. I've tried everything but still it won't stick down, it seams that the adhesive on that side isn't doing the job. I've opened it and tightened the screws, but this didn't solve the problem so I opened it again and unloosed them to see if the screen would fall into it's place, this helped a little but still when I tightened them all the problem reappeared. I've also tried warming the part with a hair drier and keeping it pressed down to make it stick but still no result. I think at this point I'll live with it.
Great review, can't wait to have my own N7. For now, in NL: How difficult is it to access the US play store? Just one time registration over VPN (like Google music) or do you need to be connected through VPN to use the service as well? And, why is rooting necessary to access the play store?
Thanks Arvid, great review. I'm gonna star my paperroute to buy one:)
I bought mine last week via a friend in the US. They are getting hard to get at. Selling like hot cakes.
+Chris Brogan you are right there. I love that Google with the Nexus family tries to set a starting point for any new device that will come out. They've done it with the phones which made sure that Samsung and HTC (to name a few) started to develop amazing phones. Now with the tablets, the same will happen (or at least I hope)
To me the Nexus is great to take along with me, still carry around my laptop to do the heavy lifting but at least I don't feel like a pack donkey carrying around a larger tablet and my laptop.
+Shane Dillon here everything worked. What seems to be the problem with the hangout? Same issue when doing a hangout via Wifi?
+Steve Kunzer and to add, I love this tablet! Even with the few negative points I was able to find
+Paolo Amoroso great point and you are right. Would love it when also people outside the indie-scene would understand that boundaries are no longer there on the internet. People don't mind paying for content, it just has to be available.
+erwin bolink mooi
Is ie zeker wel waard!
+Henk Eisema Nu nog eentje krijgen
+Patrick Mulder still available?
+Thomas Bianchini I just opened it up for now it seems to have worked. Let's see in a few days.
+Rogier van den Berg I wouldn't recommend doing it. It took me a long time before getting the right access and still some elements didn't work. Let's just wait
And you will need constant VPN to access Google Play (unlike with Google Music) for it to work. And you need to unlock/root to be able to change the identifier it uses to see which Google Play you can access.
Yes +Arvid Bux . It will be delivered in a few days at +Arjan Helle 's place
but on the whole which one do u prefer? iPad or nexus? +Arvid Bux
+Jaber Gharib ……. Nexus!
+Arvid Bux you've considered all the differences and Im sure you've got the right conclusion. But you know iPad appearance and the screen is awesome (I haven't seen Nexus in my hand)
+Jaber Gharib been there, done that. I've added a few lines on the comparison with the iPad. Also read +Chris Brogan's comments.
yeah you're right! but people taste is different! for example I hate Samsung Galaxy!
+Jaber Gharib as a tablet, I don't like the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1. I also don't hate the iPad or the iPhone.
your reasons are rational! +Arvid Bux Do you have htc tablet market in your country?. its the second most popular smartphone in Iran. it has also tablets
