Nice sum up by +The Verge
The US patent system has to be completely rebuild. It seems like design is more important than technology.

Sad day for technology (and android)
Apple boycot at this place from this moment on…..
flat glass screens with an edge so you don't break it! holy crap, how could they copy such things!
This is what someone mentioned in my stream ( +Liz ℚuilty )
In the first decisions, the court ruled that Samsung infringed upon patents relating to a variety of UI-related features, such as scrolling, multi-touch, and the bounce-back feature, which has to do with how a page responds when a user has scrolled all the way to the end.

Maybe we can find a glassfitter (is that the correct name?) and give him the patent so Apple will need to pay every window maker. (No Bill, not the windows makers).
And rounded corners! how dare they think humans may not like sharp breakable edges !
UPDATE: two inconsistencies found in the verdict, jurors asked to review verdict
I'm very happy with the Apple products, but I agree with +Arvid Bux on his statement regarding the stupid US patent system!
When a products become a hype, and brands become a sect/cult, how can you expect a jury to be objective?
In an earlier contribution to the discussion, I wrote that, if no "copying" as defined in this verdict had been performed, the free market would not have brought forth some truly desirable products (like the best-selling S2). There would only be the iPhone. This is reason enough to rethink the entire patent system.
The irony is that Apple, back then, was sued by XEROX for copying the user interface of early graphical workstations developed at PARC.
Strange that people are boycotting Apple products (wondering whether they boycot these products for real..) while Apple is only using their rights to defend their patents. Yes, the current patent system needs to be changed (rather today than tomorrow) but what is the point of boycotting Apple products? If you're used to iOS's great UI then you will be using a less advanced OS for sure…
+Roel Cobben I'm not holding my breath for a reform of the patent system. The legal system has huge inertia, especially when giants with deep pockets are involved.
As for Apple's advanced products, I think many are missing a point. I, and I guess many others, are aware that Apple products may be more advanced in certain ways. But the reasons why we choose other products are the differences from Apple products, which more than make up for the similarities. To those who don't choose Apple products this is a good tradeoff.
Advancement and product satisfaction are more subjective than many think. We don't all have the same preferences and priorities.
it's not because someone is in his right to do something, that he/she should do it, or that we should accept it. That would mean that if I had a gun, obtained legally (but through some loopholes), I would be in my right to shoot somebody.
