Camera Review : Nexus One vs G1

T-mobile G1 / HTC Hero in India

Each time when I visit a country for work, I try to get a local SIM-card. Especially when you have an Android-phone, it is good to get a local SIM-card because either you end up with huge phone bill or your Android-phone is almost rendered not-usable.  Luckily I have a good friend working in Bangalore’s Electronics City and he was able to hook me up with a SIM-card of Airtel.

So to use the local SIM-card, I had to change some settings in my phone, unfortunately Airtel’s customer services wasn’t really helpful. We weren’t even allowed to hang-up the phone as they really wanted to help us. But as techie as we can be, we figured it out ourselves. After adding a new APN I was able to directly use the Edge network of Airtel. Now I can tweet and QIK even directly from my phone without having to fear my phone bill!

So how did I get Edge to work on my T-mobile G1 on the India Airtel network;

  • Click menu > Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
  • Hit menu again and select New APN
  • Name can be anything
  • APN has to be airtelgprs.com
  • All other fields can left empty or with their default values
